The Interior
Still in Lockdown...or Le Confinement
While we are still – or at least most of us – still in lockdown (a horrible word with connotations of prison – we much prefer the French “confinement” more a case of confined to quarters) we thought that we would keep the mood internalised and look to the rooms we are in, much as Van Gogh did when he painted his bedroom in Arles (not just the once but 3 times!).
For this Challenge, once again, we would like you to first have a look at the examples in the gallery of images we have compiled below – take in the composition, the viewpoint of the artist – they are quite varied in their approach. How has colour been used and put side by side , think about the viewpoint – does it suggest calm or tension? Look at the way some artists use the way light enters the room to add interest to the composition. The list here is not exhaustive – if you like a particular image , look that artist up to see more examples of thir work. The more you see and look at, the better informed your work can be.
Then consider your own view-point. are you going to look at one corner or the whole room, or combine several views in one image. Use drawing, painting or collage – maybe take several photos and collage them together to make a 360° view. Use this opportunity to experiment with a different medium.
Don’t dismiss either – if inspiration fails you – copying one of the picture here and interpret it in your own way. The idea here is to create a scene – a story even. Let your imagination run with this – there are no limits – and remember there is no wrong way!
